With the arrival of a weekend at last with a spring climate in Naples came the third leg of the Trofeo Optisud, an important date for youth sailing. The third and final leg of the circuit that began in Termoli and continued in Formia. The students of the Mascalzone Latino Sailing School had to be there for the Optisud.
On the first day there was a good performance by Francesca Falanga, who improved a lot in the start but fell back during the race, finishing the first day’s races around 30th place (38-24-30) with a partial score of 65. A little further back was Alessio Garau, who after three races was lying a provisional 81st (42-42-37).
Armando Pelliccia, known as Dino (in the photograph), in his racing debut finished all the races in the tail end group. In this important regatta, which saw about 200 boats arriving in Naples, the Sailing School rewarded young Dino for his commitment in training, the way he cares for the equipment entrusted to him and his gradual improvement. His happiness and pride are easy to see in this photo…
Yesterday was very different from Saturday’s races, with patchy wind tending to veer. On Sunday a very gusty easterly made tactics in the races more diverse.
Stiffer conditions didn’t worry the young Mascalzones: they all improved in the rankings. Francesca continued to make progress with a 27-24-19, making her 54th in the overall rankings for the Neapolitan leg. Alessio finished 75th and Dino 90th
Great satisfaction also in the overall rankings for the three regattas, where out of 244 entries are students finished respectively 53rd (Francesca) and 57th (Alessio).
