The long period of learning the Vaurien has ended for twins Andrea and Camilla Agizza of the Mascalzone Latino Sailing School on transfer in Grosseto. In the famous Tuscan sailing resort, our students, who usually sail 420s, thanks to the helpfulness of Marco Faccenda’s yard, were able to try out the Vaurien in the world championship, the most important event in the class. This stay of more than two weeks, with training and racing, was guaranteed by Marco Iazzetta, partner in the Compagnia della Vela Marina di Grosseto.
How the adventure went is clearly explained in a brief account sent to us directly by Andrea:
“In Grosseto I found a big family, with everyone very willing and sociable with us and, something not secondary, we were one of the two youngest and beginning crews in the class. This obviously created a few problems for us mainly in handling the boat. The maturity of the other crews also made a difference: it was the first time I sailed with people much older than me. The boat was new and complex for us, it demanded hard work and the rig created a few problems for us. Generally, handling was not easy, also because it’s a boat that requires a lot of physical preparation. On the racing front, I’m happy to have found very skilled opponents. This helped us learn a lot and, thanks to the wind that was often fickle and light, it was favourable for us because we were lighter than most of the fleet, and this sometimes gave us an advantage. I like the atmosphere of the event a lot, it was familiar but there was a lot of loyal competition. These factors made it one of the greatest experiences for me. Andrea Agizza”
